Meet Uri Kogan, Senior VP of Marketing at OnPlan and someone who brings a wealth of experience to the table.
Uri Kogan has worked for 3 startups, several Fortune 500 companies, a Fortune 10, and the US Government for over 20 years.
Q: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
Truth be told I love what I do, which makes it possible to do quite a lot of it! But it is of course important to decompress and let your mind wander. I live near a hilly park where I love to run and take advantage of the beautiful scenery and weather we have in California. I often get my best ideas while I’m running.
Q: What are some fun facts about you that people don’t know?
I used to sing opera, and have both music performance and economics undergrad degrees. When I was interviewing for economic consulting jobs as a graduating senior in college, people would always ask about that, and I would tell them economics wasn’t a sure thing, so my music degree was my safety. If they didn’t get the joke, they weren’t the right firm for me.
Q: Was there anything in your past experiences that have been helpful in your current role?
I’ve worked in many different companies, from large enterprise-level businesses to startups, in roles from marketing, to supply chain to transformation. I also have a lot of experience as an Excel modeler and consultant. I can bring a little bit of everything to the role I have now.
Q: What are some of the values that drive you at work?
One of the values I got from my parents was to constantly question and push back and seek to understand through discussion and debate. At OnPlan, we’re not afraid to ask questions or push back on a perspective or to look for more data to validate a point that someone wants to bring across, which is really refreshing.
Q: What do you like about working at OnPlan?
I like that there are just terrific people all around but no big egos. Everyone wants to pitch and help and doesn’t assume they know best. I also love that we’re doing something new, not just fixing a poor decision that someone may have made in the past or changing something that doesn’t work. Anything is possible here. I also get excited about democratizing forecasting and making things easier for our customers.
Q: What makes you passionate about forecasting?
Forecasting isn’t just about finance and spreadsheets. Forecasting is at the core of human behavior and activity. Whether you are thinking about taking an umbrella out with you because it may rain or wondering what to say to someone to make yourself more attractive, it’s all about making a projection and getting feedback. I love that we’re helping a wide range of people become better forecasters.
Q: How does OnPlan make people better forecasters?
Whenever an executive has an intuition about their business, the team has to go through this lengthy process of going through all the data to validate that intuition. Considering today’s fast-paced business environment, it takes far too long. With OnPlan, you can eliminate the distance so that intuition can go straight to the information that drives decision-making. Like a spreadsheet with attitude!
Q: Why do you think OnPlan is so tightly integrated to spreadsheets, instead of asking users to learn a new language?
Spreadsheets are the lingua franca of finance and modeling. They are also really useful — they’re flexible, easy to use, and have a wide range of applications. Unfortunately, they weren’t designed for forecasting specifically. At OnPlan, we keep what’s great about spreadsheets and put them in a forecasting-specific Iron Man suit with best practices Apps, features, and capabilities. It’s an incredibly powerful combination.
Strategic thinking, storytelling, problem-solving, and objectivity are four soft skills that set aside the best FP&A analysists. Here’s why.
